How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO and GEO share the goal of discoverability but operate on different mechanics.
SEO optimizes for ranking positions in traditional search engine result pages. Success is measured by keyword rankings, organic traffic, and click-through rates. The primary signals are backlinks, technical site health, and keyword relevance.
GEO optimizes for citation share in AI-generated answers. Success is measured by how often your brand appears in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini responses to relevant queries. The primary signals are entity clarity (how well AI systems recognize and define your brand), content specificity (whether your claims are citable), and authoritative cross-platform presence.
About half of AI citations come from content that also ranks in the traditional top 10 — so strong SEO does transfer. But the transfer isn't complete. A site can have high domain authority and low AI citation share simultaneously. Aggressive keyword optimization, thin content at scale, and generic descriptions all hurt GEO while leaving SEO rankings intact.
The most important practical difference: GEO performance doesn't appear in Google Search Console. Measuring it requires systematic prompt testing across AI engines.
